Solutions Management Group works with a local nonprofit to gain a well-established technology model with employee buy-in.

The Client

The client is Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, a non-profit organization based in Iowa and a member of a prominent US mentoring organization. Their goal is to establish and sustain one-to-one mentoring connections that inspire and empower the potential of young people. For over three decades, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley has been guided by the conviction that every child possesses the potential to thrive and excel in life. As a volunteer organization supported by donors, they facilitate impactful connections between adult volunteers ("Bigs") and children ("Littles") aged 7 to 18 across eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Through these relationships, they foster positive friendships that deeply impact and enrich the lives of young individuals.

The Challenge: No clear technology plan

Before teaming up with SMG, due to the lack of resources, Big Brothers Big Sisters struggled with technology issues that hindered their effectiveness. Their approach to IT issues was reactive, lacking clear planning and funding, which in turn, hindered their ability to plan for the future. This limitations made it difficult for them to address ongoing challenges, particularly in updating product licensing and assessing the relevance of certain products and processes. As a result, they faced a perpetual cycle of trying to keep up with technology advancements while grappling with uncertainties about whether certain tools had become outdated or outgrown their usefulness. This uncertainty not only created inefficiencies but also posed risks to the organization's ability to fulfill its mission effectively.

The Strategy

The new BBBS strategy centered around leveraging SMG's customer assessment and planning tools to drive proactive decision-making and enhance operational efficiency. By harnessing the insights gained from these tools, BBBS will be empowered to anticipate challenges, seize opportunities, and optimize processes.

The Solution: Best Practices

  1. Utilize data-driven insights: Make use of analytics and monitoring tools to gather relevant data and insights about your operations, customer behavior, and market trends.

  2. Anticipate challenges: Proactively identify potential obstacles and risks before they become significant issues. This may involve scenario planning, risk assessments, and regular monitoring of key performance indicators.

  3. Seize opportunities: Stay vigilant for opportunities to innovate, expand, or improve your products, services, or processes. Act decisively to capitalize on these opportunities and gain a competitive advantage.

  4. Optimize processes: Continuously review and streamline your workflows, systems, and procedures to enhance efficiency and reduce waste. Look for opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and improve resource allocation.

  5. Foster strategic alignment: Ensure that your organization's goals, strategies, and activities are aligned with the overall vision and objectives of your partnership with SMG. This alignment facilitates effective collaboration and maximizes the impact of your joint efforts.

  6. Embrace adaptability: Cultivate a culture of adaptability and flexibility within your organization, enabling you to respond quickly and effectively to changing market conditions, customer needs, and technological advancements.

The Results: A feasible plan, budget, and timeline to reach objectives.

By facilitating an open and honest conversation about their strategic direction, SMG was able to provide a defined plan to help this nonprofit achieve their goals. This approach completely changed the game for them.
